1. Myostatin

What the hell? Myostatin. A lack of.
Myostatin is a protein that regulates muscle growth in a variety of animals (including people). If one copy of the gene is defective the animal has noticeable increased muscle mass, and if it lacks both copies of the gene its muscle growth is incredibly uninhibited like the beasts up there.
One medical application being looked into is inhibiting myostatin in patients with muscular dystrophy.
